Imagine
yourself as a Samurai warrior in feudal Japan: clothed in heavy armor, battling
with enemies on a daily basis, and fighting for survival. What would you do
if you lost your precious sword in battle? Faced with intimidating, armed
and armored opponents, Samurais like you needed to be able to defend themselves
on their feet. For this reason, they developed Jujitsu, an empty-handed extension
of the sword fighting arts that contained techniques that targeted unprotected
areas of an opponent's body (e.g. neck). Although its name means "the
gentle or soft (ju) art or fighting method (jitsu)," Jujitsu is a highly
practical self-defense system that incorporates techniques of the empty-hands
or against weapons. Browse through this section to learn more about this powerful
martial art!
