Judoka wear a training uniform called a judogi, which consists of a white cotton jacket and trousers. It is designed after traditional Japanese garments that were made of strong and lightweight fabric. Both parts are loosely worn to allow movement. The pants hang below the knee, and the jacket is held in place with a colored belt (obi) that is tied twice around the waist and knotted in front. The color of the belt denotes the judoka's rank, or level of expertise. Judoka do not wears shoes during practice or competition. Since the year 2000, many major international competitions have adopted a dress code in which one competitor wears a white judogi and the other one wears a blue judogi. Other competitions may use this as well to help the judges differentiate between the contestants.
