Hapkido,
one of the Korean martial arts, has been gaining a huge following in recent
years as a practical method of self-defense. This is perhaps because Hapkido
does not require great size or strength-its comprising words hap (to combine
harmony, unity), ki (power of mind, body and spirit, inner strength), and
do (the way), or "the way of coordinated (harmonizing) power," clearly
show the emphasis on combined power of the mind, body, and spirit. Technically,
Hapkido also contains a variety of techniques, including grappling, striking
and kicking. Although occasionally confused with Aikido because of similar
roots and the same translation, Hapkido is distinct as an integrated, versatile,
and almost "scientific" martial art.
