Although not all schools use the same ranking system(if any) or colors, a basic ranking system set by the Capoeira Federation is used. In it, students earn a "Cordao," or string-like rope based on the colors of the Brazilian flag. The colors are ordered according to the order they are placed on the Brazilian flag (outside to inside).

A student's progression in rope colors represents his increased understanding of the art's culture, practice, and history. Individuals receive their ropes as a ceremony called a Batizado (baptism). After receiving the first rope, a student is officially a Capoerista and is responsible for continuing to develop Capoeira skills, as well as understanding of Portuguese, Capoeira history, music, customs and/or philosophy. Students will go through four beginner levels before they are graduated to the more advanced ranks, where they learn how to teach the art. After acquiring teaching experience, students become "Contre-Mestres" and can start teaching classes on their own, or even pursue Master-level ranking.
