Capoeira,
which originally began as an African martial art that used weapons, grappling
and striking techniques, and animal forms, has evolved in Brazil into a unique
blend of acrobatics, martial techniques, rituals, music, and dance. Capoeira
students don't just practice, they celebrate, coordinating their movements
with "partners" in almost dance-like motion to the rhythms and beats
of percussion instruments and singing of their fellow classmates. Training
becomes more than just a pursuit of physical ability, but also a collective
expression of their heritage. Interestingly, defensive and offensive techniques
are subtly woven into this musical motion to create an effective martial art
heavily infused with Afro-Brazilian culture and artistry. Although it is not
one of the major Asian arts, Capoeira has established a special niche in the
martial arts world.
