Aikido at first seems like a backwards martial art. What makes it unique is its non-competitive, non-violent aspect characterized by the harmonious relationship between "Uke" (the one who receives) and "Nage" (the one who throws). It doesn't matter how physically strong, fast, heavy, or big you are - a person half your size can send you flying. And instead of fighting back an attack, you are taught to yield and cooperate naturally with your opponent's energy. These principles are what make Aikido so effective. Defined as "the way (do) of harmony (ai) with the spirit/ energy of the universe (ki)", Aikido emphasizes the importance of the spirit of reconciliation with others, one's mind, body, breath, as well as with nature. Read on to find out why!
