Try these yourself

These activities were designed to show you how your brain functions and works. It just takes a few minutes to try them out.

Ok, here’s the first one: Read the passage below.
There is a certain website with a white background and black text. From what it seems at first glance, there are a lot of words all over the place in neat lines and arranged in paragraphs without any variation in font or style, making it look monotonous and boring. There is one blue-coloured and underlined word at the end of the jumble of words.
Now, how many seconds did you take to read all that? Now look at your web browser. Doesn’t the description you just read match this webpage? How much time did you take to gather this information by looking at your web browser?
What does this tell you about our brain? Does it work much faster by looking at a picture itself than by looking at words that describe it?

Ok, now for the second one:
(This one requires some simple preparation if you want to do this)

Prepare three basins or buckets with ice, tap water and hot water in them respectively. Put the one with ice on the left, the one with tap water in the middle and the one with hot water on the right. Now put your left hand into the ice and your right hand into the hot water for 30 seconds. Then quickly transfer your hands to the basin with the tap water. By right, they should feel the same. But does you left hand feel warmer than your right?
What does this tell you about our sense of touch and temperature? It is very accurate? Now you know why you must use a thermometer to tell if you have a fever.
