Could your dog be the cure for your kidney failure in the future?
Genes are finally alterable, and what do scientists do with this new skill? They engineer mice for lab experiments. Now that on its own might not seem so bad, but what the scientists have done is that they have "created", so to speak, mice that have diseases engineered into their DNA. Which means that we might have mice running around in a cage with tuberculosis (brittleness of the bones), heart disease (heart failure) or even cancer! Oh, the inhumanity of it all!
Now, some people argue that as long as it benefits the human race, any animals that are used for experiments anyway can be used as such. But one wonders: if this is the case, then why form the SPCA? People could just say that they were torturing the animal "for fun". Many things we make also serve this purpose, and the torturer could go free!
