Bibliotheca Alexandrina means the Alexandrian Library in Latin. The Egyptian rulers Ptolemy I and Ptolemy II, developed it in the 200's BC When Alexandria was in a competition with Athens to be the centre of culture and sciences. This great library which was built in the royal neighborhood has graduated a lot of famous scientists like Euclides. It contained more than 400,000 scrolls in different categories. What a pity that this great pyramid of culture was burned by Julius Caesar.

But in 1995, the president of the Republic of Egypt, Mohamed Hosni Moubarak has asked all the world to help him rebuilding this library and as a response, all the Arab countries had donated so did the UNESCO . And now, Alexandria is waiting for the birth of this cultural event.

The Bibliotheca Alexandrina will contain a main library, a library for blinds, Alexandria School Information Studies (ISIS), Calligraphy Museum, Alexandria Museum for Restoration and Conversation, a laboratory, a bookshop and a cafeteria.

The design concept is a simple circle inclined towards the sea, partly submerged in a pool of water the image of the ancient Egyptian sun that will illuminate the world and human civilization

The passageway links the University of Alexandria, the library and the water front avenue. The building is surrounded by a wall clad with Aswan granite engraved with calligraphy and representative inscriptions from the world's civilizations.
