How to Create Your Madrigal Dinner Costumes
There are many options for people looking for madrigal costumes. The most common are buying, renting, or making your own costumes. All of these options have their good points and bad points.

Buying Your Costumes

Internet site are available that sell costumes of all eras. Larger cities and Renaissance fairs may have shops that sell costumes. Seamstresses may be hired to prepare outfits for key cast members. Unfortunately, many costume shops are very expensive, and even on the Internet, the prices don't go down by much. View the Photos of Elizabethan Costumes and The Rennaissance Tailor links to see the kind of detailed work that professional designers can create.

Renting Your Costumes

Similar to buying costumes, renting costumes can be expensive but convenient. Renting costumes is more practical if the madrigal dinner is only going to be repeated a few times. If the plan is to have an annual madrigal, buying might be less expensive. Check with area colleges to see if costumes may be rented.

Making Your Costumes

Making madrigal costumes is the most time-consuming option. Fabrics and patterns are often cheaper than buying or renting already made costumes, but making costumes takes skill. Sometimes, parents or friends of people in or working on the madrigal dinner will volunteer their time to make and design costumes. The Guide to Commercial Costume Patterns link below will provides specific pattern numbers. If no one volunteers, it’s best to go with one of the other options.
