Lesson Plan: Propaganda Types

Objective:

At the conclusion of this lesson, students should be able to do the following:

  1. Understand some major types of propaganda used by governments during the Spanish-American War and World War II.
  2. Identify and understand the impact of propaganda on societies over time.

Anticipatory Set:

Show advertisements from a magazine (alcohol or tobacco ads may be used if ok with school because they are very persuasive) - The point here is that advertisements use propaganda techniques.

Activities:

  1. Distribute sentence strips with the names of all of the Propaganda Techniques to the students (some techniques will be duplicated).
  2. Students will spend 5-10 minutes preparing a 30 second to one minute speech/presentation identifying the propaganda technique, its use during the Spanish-American War and World War II and an example of its use today.
  3. Students will ask questions of the presenter and the presenter will
    respond.

Closure:

Teacher displays a poster or chart paper or overhead of each
propaganda technique, the example from each war and an example from current usage.

Evaluation: Teacher discretion
