Lesson Plan: Spanish-American War

Objective:

At the conclusion of this lesson, students should be able to do the following:

  1. Understand the causes of the Spanish American War.
  2. Understand the effects of the Spanish American War.
  3. Identify and understand the types of propaganda used before and during the Spanish American War.

Anticipatory Set:

Project the overview section of the Spanish American War onto screen for whole class viewing or allow each student to visit it individually.

Activities:

  1. Form pairs of students from among your class.
  2. Students will review the essays in the Spanish American War Section of the web site (divide the groups according to the essays related to the class curriculum).
  3. Students will perform a "Think - Pair - Share" activity by doing the following: read and discuss essay individually, discuss main ideas and content, share with class either the causes of the war (from the essay material) or the effects of the war (from the essay material).
  4. Students will create a poster identifying the cause and its related type of propaganda (example: Yellow Journalism - Sensationalism).

Closure:

Teacher-led discussion on types of propaganda and their uses today (continuation of lesson 1 closure if used in a sequence).
