Classroom - Hurricanes - What is a hurricane?

Hurricanes are very large tropical lows which spin counterclockwise and have an area in the center, called the eye. The other clouds rotate around it. The hurricane occurs in tropical areas and is so violent that it can impact wather along the entire East coast and Gulf coast of the United States, many parts of the Caribbean islands, and Mexico. In the Western Pacific area, the hurrican causes devastating impacts to India, China, Japan, and Korea. A hurricane can reach a constant speed of 74mph or more. The eye of the storm is approximately 20-30 miles wide and may extend over 400 miles. The storm might bring torrential rains, high winds and storm surges. A hurricane can last over 2 weeks over open water.
