Deforestation, burning of fossil fuels and other activities which produces carbon dioxide are contributors to floods. This is because carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas which traps heat in the atmosphere. If the amount of such gas is increased significantly, it will lead to the global warming, which could cause temperatures to rise. Rise in temperatures would cause melting in the poles which would in turn lead to a rise in sea levels. This could cause floods along low lying areas. Reforestation is one way to solve the problems. Not only does it help reduce the amounts of carbon dioxide, it also prevents the runoff of heavy rains. Alternative sources of power such as solar, wind and tidal energy can be used instead of burning fossil fuels. This helps to reduce the carbon dioxide levels. Back (Safety) | Next (Flood control) |
