Classroom - Earthquakes - Reducing Damages

Earthquakes cannot be prevented. However, its damages can be reduced. Gas and water pipes as well as electricity cables should be well-protected. Electricity generators can automatically shut down when earthquakes occur. Gas pipes can also be shut through the use of automatic valves.

Buildings can also be built in a certain structure which prevents it from collapsing in the event of an earthquake. A good example would be the Transamerica Building in San Francisco. Its triangular framework, supported by concrete-clad steel columns can withstand the most severe earthquakes.
