Classroom - Earthquakes - Predicting an Earthquake

Many different instruments can be used to predict earthquakes.

Creepmeter
The creepmeter measures horizontal movements along a fault line which are continuous. Weight on the end of a piece of wire rises or falls with the fault movements.

Strain meters
This is a very sensitive instrument, able to detect the tiniest rock movements. It gets its energy from the solar panels.

Laser light
A beam of laser light is sent out from one side of a fault line to a reflector on the other side. Movements of the ground along the fault can be measured by calculating the time taken for the laser beam to be reflected.
