THE SABRE
The sabre, the national weapon of Hungary, is a modern
version of the
slashing cavalry
sword. The
sabre is both a
thrashing and cutting weapon, so points can be scored by using any part of the
blade. Target area in sabre is from the head to the bend of the hips, including
arms.
Right-of-way
is practiced in sabre to differentiate offense and defense. It is used only when
both fencers score touches at once.
Sabre
moves lightning-fast as it is possible to score touches without having point
control, which is necessary in epee and foil. Sabre lamees (metallic jackets)
are worn to show target area. A touch must be scored on the jacket, or the
metallic mask, for the electric machine to administer the touch.
