THE EPEE
Epee was originally a dueling weapon. The whole body is the target for epee, and touches are scored with the tip of the blade. The blade is much stiffer than a foil, and the guard is larger.
There is no right-of-way in epee. If both fencers attack at the same time, a double touch will be scored, as, historically, both fencers would be injured. In a 4-4 (or 14-14) bout, if a double touch is scored, the point will be thrown out, and a point must be scored by only one fencer in order to win.
Because the full body is valid target area, the epee fencer’s uniform does not include a lamee.
