THE FOIL

The foil is made of a flexible rectangular blade with a blunt point. The target area in foil is the torso, between the collar bone and the hip. Points in foil must be scored with the tip of the blade.

Right-of-way is practiced in foil. Right-of-way is the differentiation of offense and defense, made by the referee. The differences is important only when both fencers touch at the same time. Right-of-way is established by either starting the attack before the opponent, or beating the opponents blade.

A metallic vest (lamee) is worn to register touches on the torso. The lamee covers the target area in foil.
