When the city was conquered by the Jews in 997 BC, it was named David City after the Prophet Daoud, peace and blessings be upon him, because he established his government therein (Mahmoud 1984). This name did not last long and was soon replaced by Orshalem and continued thereafter until the end of the Jewish rule, which lasted only 73 years
