Here is our original glossary of terms, everything from AWORD to ZWORD.

access

If a computer user has access to a certain file, he/she has permission on the server to view the file.

access control

This is a method to stop unauthorized viewers from seeing confidential data; only those with access are allowed to view it, and all others will receive "400" errors. 

access number

This is a telephone number that is provided by your access provider. When your dial-up modem calls the number, you are provided a connection to the Internet.

access time

This is the time in between when the computer asks for the information from the server and when it actually receives the information.

Accessware

This software makes it so that not only unwanted people are blocked, but those who re wanted have security too. It is a highly secured system.

AccessWatch

This is a program that checks the stats of a website, including things like who visited the site and when, and other useful statisctics.

account

When you sign up for a service on a website, such as one that gives you a username and password for purchasing products, you create an account with the service. This usually gives you privileges that those without accounts can not have.

Acrobat

This is a program that allows you to read or write documents in the .pfd format. This format can only be read by Adobe Acrobat, and is useful for creation pre-formatted printer ready versions of documents.

active

The active window is the one that you are currently working and/or using.  For instance, click on your browser (the window you are viewing this text through), it is now the active window. An active link is one that works.

ActiveX

This is a Microsoft technology that allows you to make your site interactive. It is a Microsoft version of things like Shockwave or Java.

ActiveX Control

This is any applet that was created with ActiveX, and is used to make the web page interactive.

ad banner

These banners are advertisement for a company, and serves as a link to the companies web site. They are a standard size, and when clicked, the website that has the banner will receive points with the Banner Exchange, based on how many times it was clicked.

Ad Server

This is a server that is used by a Banner Exchange, it automatically rotates banners, and gives points to the site with the banner.  It keeps track of all the visitors who click on the banners.

address

This is the URL of a website (ie. /C0100523). 

AI

Artificial Intelligence is what runs most multiplayer games where you can play agaist the computer.  It also runs programs where you can "talk" to your computer, and have it respond.

AIFF or AIF

This is a sound format for Macintosh users.

aliasing & anti-aliasing

 Aliasing is the jagged edges around some     fonts when enlarged.

alphanumeric

Using the letter A-Z and digits 0-9. No other character are alphanumeric.

alt

The alt key is located right near the space bar, and is used mainly for shortcuts. For instance, Alt-F4 will close your browser window. Try that later, or open a new window before doing so.

analog

Considered the opposite of digital.  Analog is more of a physical system. For instance, a digital watch uses electronic to show numbers. An analog watch has hand and moves, physical movement.
anchor

anime

This is a nickname for Animation.

anonymous

This is a form of security, being anonymous is not revealing your identity.  This is good for things like chat room, where you are anonymous in terms of your location and name.

anonymous FTP

This allows you to search through a sites files using FTP without setting up an account first.

anonymous posting

Any message that is posted in a newsgroup where the write did not reveal his/her identity.

AOL

This is an ISP that includes many member only features, currently with over 21 million users.

app

An abbreviation for the word application.

Apple

This is the company that creates Macintosh computers.

applet

A small script that can be written in a variety of languages, some include Java, Javascript, Perl, or C++.

application

This is a program on the computer which has a useful purpose that betters the users computing experience.

application server

This is a server dedicated to hosting applications which usually involve very large amounts of information.

architecture

We love this word (one of the reasons we picked it for our title). It is the name for an entire Art form, it encompasses a vast amount of topics. Architecture can be designing anything from a web site to a 55 story building. Information Architecture is designing company and intranet systems for the movement of information.

archive

A group of items with a common topic. A newsletter archive contains past newsletters, while a picture archive can be almost a library of pictures.

ARPA

If you read our Internet History course, you would know that this is one of the beginning organizations that started networking the first colleges together.

ARPANet

The name for the linked colleges and organizations.
article

ASCII

(American Standard Code for Information Interchange) This the standard systems for tranlating Latin based letters into binary code (7 digits, either 1s or 0s. It is pronounced ass-key.

ASP

These are cgi-scripts based on Visual Basic, which makes it easier for visual basic programmers to use the technology.  

at sign or @

After the beginning of a screename, the @ sign is placed to signify that it is a certain username AT a certain ISP.

attachment

This is a file that is tagged along with an email sent. They need to be separately downloaded for viewing, ad can be any file format.

authentication

This is a system that is used to make sure that users are who they say they are. Credit Card authorization is a system that will only allow you to go into a site if you provide your credit card number.

author

This is the creator of any script, language, or site.
