There are hundreds and thousands of domain names available to anyone who would like one. A domain name can have up to 63 characters total. Letters, Numbers, and hyphens are the only ones allowed.

Although this leaves an enormous amount of potential names, nobody is going to be happy with www.thisnametakesanextremelylongtimetotypeandishardtoremember.com
We would suggest an easy to remember name with no more than 6 or 7 characters.

It is also important to choose a name that is catchy and easy to say. This will allow the name to be passed on orally without spelling trouble. Avoid long names or ones that could have multiple spellings.

Although obvious, make sure to use a name that has a direct relationship with the topic of the site. As you can see, we chose Web Architect because it is teaching about the design and creation of websites.

The ability to be able to be said allowed and spelled correctly is very important. As your website grows, you will find that a fairly large amount of traffic to your site will be gained by people's word-of-mouth. We also chose a name that cannot be easily misspelled.

Another choice that you have is what suffix to use. There are actually a large number of suffixes that you can use. The most common ones are:

.com (companies or private sites, can be used by the general public)
.net (general public)
.edu (educational institutions)
.org (non-profit organizations)
.gov (government sites)

The most commonly known and used suffix is .com. This is a highly suggested prefix because of the universal knowledge of it.
