When alcohol is more than just a drink.. Probably we are all familiar to alcohol as a drink. In Brazil however special farming is taken to grow sugar cane at large quantities. This is then brewed to alcohol. This alchol is used as fuel to run vehicles. This is a good alternative to petroleum and is less a pollutant as is petroleum. In Britain, marijuana seezed by the drug control dept is processed into energy that is used to heat many houses around the factory. Fuel from oil

In human terms, resources are materials we get from the environment
to meet our needs. Some are the basic materials resources we and other
organisms need to keep alive. Others are materials from which we obtain
energy or substances useful for our civilized way of life.
The problems that we face today are mainly focused on the shortage of these resources due to poor allocation, increased use or natural circumstances. Hunger may be a result of drought or floods that cause lack of food which is a resource. The twain are natural causes. But lack of enough energy to run different parts of industries and homes is due to increase in energy use and in part poor allocation. Renewable resources Renewable resources, as the name suggests, can be replaced. They are things which grow, and are materials based on plants or animals e.g. trees and fish. Althugh renewable resources are replaceable there are certain points where by this becomes virtually impossible for a period of time and are said to be exhausted. This may happen if the amount of natural resources that are beign removed or ultilised do not equal the amount at wich they are produced. Take for example a forest, increased use of forests for paper, furniture and stationaries causes a reduction in the amount of trees in the forest. Trees take a long time to grow and so at a time there would be more trees used up than produced. Many governemnts have called forth for the proper ultilisation of natural resources in particular forests. Many stationary companies world wide have put afforestration as part of the companies job to promote their products. Companies such as Faber castle which produce colour pencils and many other stationaries for example replant trees. The ullilisation of renewable energy is one of the currently proposed solutions to solve the energy crisis of the world. Non Renewable resources: These are resources which, for all practical purposes, are not replaced as they are used. e.g. minerals such as iron and fuel such as coal and oil. There is a fixed quantity of these resources on the planet and in time they will be exhausted. Mineral and ore extraction have been carried out for a considerable time with ores such as copper, lead, tin and aluminium being mined. In theory these metals could be recycled but in practice this is often difficult or impossible for various reasons. The ultilisation of fossil fuels which is a non renewable resource has brought many of now the worlds challenging problems of pollution, in particular air pollution. The supply of many ores is becoming more scarce and the belief that supply would satisfy demand for the foreseeable future is being questioned. As the supply is reduced, the price increases and it could be that sources previously considered un economic may prove worth while exploiting again. [BACK TO TOP] UTILIZATION
OF RENEWABLE ENERGY:
Hydro power, power derived from the fall of water from a higher to a lower level, and extracted by means of waterwheels or hydraulic turbines. Is the energy stored in the nucleus of an atom and released through fission, fusion, or radioactivity. The power derived from wind by the use of windmills. Solar Energy, radiant energy produced in the sun as a result of nuclear fusion reactions. [BACK TO TOP] |
