OZONE DEPLETION:
Over the past few years, pesticides containing CFCs [Chloroflorocarbons]were
wiely used around the world, now the levels have dropped although they
are still used in some countries. The reason for scientists to try to find
an alternative to CFCs containing agents is linked to the effects that
they have on the environment.
When CFCs are realised into the atmosphere, they split and produced
chlorine radicals which react with oxygen radicals in the atmosphere that
would have otherwised combined with atmospheric oxygen to form ozone. The
chlorine and oxygen radical produce ClO, which is a stable compound. Therefore
the presence of CFCs reduce the production of ozone, when this process
continues after sometime there happens to be more oxygen molecules than
ozone molecules. This is called ozone depletion or simlpy the thining of
the ozone. After some time ozone depletion results to what are known as
black holes. The ozone protects us from the harmful UV rays and their absence
allows UV rays to reach us. UV radiation causes health problems such as
cancers.
The concerns over ozone depletion brought about different amendments
such as the Montreal protocol amendment.
