Another Controversy
Like cloning, stem cell research is being debated on. President Bush has decided the fate of the federal funding. His decision is he will limit federal funding of stem cell research to about 60 cell lines that already exist. Cell lines are cell colonies derived from a single parent. According to an ABC poll, 6 of 10 informed Americans approve of his decision because they believed it was morally, politically, and scientifically correct.
Like the Pope John Paul II, people against stem cell research believe stem cell research destroys a life before it is born.
Advocates for the idea say that it will bring more hope to diseases involving the brain. This is because stem cells can turn into any cell of the body. This means that they can transform into nerve cells that cannot be regenerated.
