Senses - Topic Summary
What is sense? It is a faculty, which external and internal stimuli are sent to the brain, where they are expressed as sensations. We, humans know and learn more about the world through our senses. Basically, the five special senses that we commonly know are sight, sound, smell, taste and touch respectively. All of them are concerned with the outer world, in which external stimuli are received and conducted by sensory receptors in the eye, the ear, the nose and the taste buds on the tongue. How do they work in the brain? What is the sensory receptor for?

Smell and taste are closely related with the limbic system, as on the other hand, sight, sound and touch are strongly represented in the cortices. Are there only five senses in the world? Actually, there are many more senses exist in the world besides the five senses, such as the kinesthetic sense, which is able to feel motions found in joints and muscles through receptors and the vestibular sense, which is for balancing by using a fluid called endolymph found in the inner ears.
