Dreams & Sleep - Topic Summary
Everyone needs to sleep. We can't live without sleep. How much do you know about sleep? What is the purpose of sleep? During sleep, our mind always seems to unfold a story or some other events. What are they? These episodes are generally called dreams. Everyone dreams, not only human beings do, but also in other mammals including dogs, elephants and monkeys. What are dreams signifying? Why do we have dreams? How do we dream? These questions have puzzled mankind and have not yet been clarified for over hundreds of years.

Every night we need to sleep, why do we need to sleep? What is sleep for? In the course of sleep, we often dream, yet we don't really know what our dreams are signifying. Dreams are really a personal and private thing. It is you who had a dream and it is you who experienced your dream. Different people have different ideas of what dream really is. Therefore as a result, it leads to no exact meaning or conclusions of what dream really is. Perhaps, it is best to agree with Michel de Montiagne that "Dreams are the true interpreters of our inclinations, but art is required to sort them out." What we see and what we hear in our dreams are reflections of reality, or… are they?

Remove this Quote bar "The number of possible "on-off" patterns of neuronal firing is immense, estimated as a staggering ten times ten one million times (ten to the millionth power). The brain is obviously capable of an imponderably huge variety of activity; the fact that it is often organized and functional is quite an accomplishment! " -- Daniel J. Siegel (from The Developing Mind, 1999)
