'Ah-ha!' How do
you often say this sentence? Is it the time when you have thought of something
new, or suddenly blessed with a moment of inspiration?
Do you remember
the example of Archimedes in the bath? The king asked him to prove that his crown
was made of gold. He needed to be sure of the weight and density of the gold
used in the crown. He had struggled for a long period and still couldn't figure
out the method to do that. After another day without any useful ideas, he went
to have a bath. When he was sinking into the bathtub, and noticing how his body
had displaced water, he suddenly realized that the water displaced was the weight
of the body that had displaced it and cried out "Eureka!"
He finally solved
the problem and proved that the crown wasn't a hundred percent made of gold.
When a new idea
is born, all of us are usually come out with an "ah-ha" moment. We
cannot predict when we are going to have the new ideas, we simply don't know
how we can have the ideas. We will need to consider about what Archimedes had
done before he took the bath. How many different methods he had tried before
he had realized that theory? Is it because he was relaxing in a bath that matters?
How did his mind work which made him receptive to new ideas? The answers to these
questions are complicated, yet by exploring them, we can learn more about creativity.
During these 'ah-ha' moments, it is no doubt that your mind is completely powered
up and probably working in another gear of the brain.
If you think that
you are creative or you can be more creative, then you have the ability to be
creative. Louis Pasteur, the French scientist said at the very beginning of the
19th century: "Chances favors only the prepared mind". You need to
make sure that your mind is prepared therefore it is seemingly to enjoy those
"ah-ha" moments - those surges of power called inspiration.
