Our brain is mainly
divided into 2 "halves", the left side and the right side. The left-hand
side is seemingly responsible for number and language. It is likely to process
information logically. However, the right-hand side of the brain takes a more
holistic view of information and enjoys patterns. When we are thinking laterally,
it is probably involved also. Not surprisingly, the right side is known as the
more creative half of the brain. Generally, men tend to be left-brained and women
are to be right-brained. This kind of generalization needs to be treated with
concern.
It is discovered
that the corpus callosum (the part of the brain connecting the 2 halves) is somewhat
thicker in people whose right side of the brain is dominant. People who understand
their creativity fully are those who can use both sides of their brain most efficiently.
Our brain tends to organize things into familiar patterns and our mind seeks
to make connections to things it already "knows" and then "stores"
the experiences accordingly. This can be unhelpful when you are trying to be
creative. About 30 years ago, Edward de Bono observed that: Insight, creativity
and humor are so exclusive because the mind is so efficient. The mind functions
to create patterns out of its surroundings. As the patterns are used they become
ever more firmly established.
In other words,
because our brain and mind is working in this way, we become firm in our ways
of thinking or doing things, we are unwilling to think about something in a different
way. There is a real sense, when it comes to releasing our creativity, we will
have to unlearn much of what we have picked up in our daily life before. We need
to rethink what is meant by being a creative person, and to discover the best
way of creating. In this way, we can learn to think in a more creative way.
