Epilepsy
is a chronic brain disorder marked by major sudden changes in the electrical
activity of the brain characterized by uncontrolled movements of the body, disorientation
or confusion, sudden fear, and even loss of consciousness. These changes in
the electrophysiological state of the brain are called seizures. Head injuries,
strokes, brain tumours, toxins, genetic conditions, or severe infections such
as meningitis or encephalitis can cause epilepsy.
Although
there is no cure for epilepsy, it can be treated with drugs such as antiepileptics
(anticonvulsant) or surgery when drug treatment fails. In children, a special
high-fat diet can also be used to help prevent seizures.
