Photography - to remember people and places, people make photo albums or scrapbooks.
Emilie suggests to label your photos and to arrange your albums as soon as possible.
Linking words and images helps to preserve these memories.
If you wait two years, you may be surprised to find that you can no longer accurately remember all of your softball teammates' names or which national park is represented by that lovely sunset in your large stack of vacation photos.Michael would think to write down where the photos are being taken if he wanted to remember later. Do you think this photo is from Arizona, New Mexico, or Texas?
Souvenir - the word means "to remember." Some people like to collect or purchase souvenirs to serve as reminders or mementos of where they have been. These can be as simple as collecting small state magnets to put on your refrigerator or marking and saving maps and tour guidebooks. | ![]() |
Postcards - Many people send postcards, particularly if they are visiting a new or famous place.
Emilie remembers that her postcards usually end up in her scrapbooks because she buys more than she takes time to write...Or she writes them, but never gets them to the post office. That is one reason why she really loves E-cards, like the Virtual Postcards on this site!
Reunions - Some use their vacation time each year to hold gatherings of friends or family and travel to the same place where they share memories and renew contact. This may result in blended memories, if looking back, one cannot remember mixes up or combines details from different annual reunions.

Enrich
your vacations by being lifelong learners. Reinforce children's memories
of "book learning" by taking educational trips to museums, monuments,
memorials, and historic places.

Lesson plan
Creative Writing exercise for exploring Vacation Memories through the Senses
Encourage students to write a short autobiographical story about their summer vacation memories. Instead of the traditional event reporting, require that they incorporate descriptive passages involving as many senses as possible to take advantage of memory associations.
