Autobiographical Memory

Autobiographical Memory is memory of events personally experienced (Benjamin, Hopkins, & Nation, 1994. p.261) (Matlin, 1998, p. 154). Autobiographical memory makes up who you are because it is what gives you a past, a personal history.

Autobiographical memory can consist of:

Two types of special emotionally arousing autobiographical memories:

  • flashbulb memories - memories that are related to experiencing a surprising, emotional event in history.
  • eyewitness memories - memories of someone who has seen a crime can provide as vital evidence in solving a crime.

People experience their memories in different ways.
