Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID)
Dissociative Identity Disorder, formerly known as Multiple Personality Disorder, is a disorder in which two or more distinct personality states or identities exist in one body.
Dissociative Identity Disorder & Memory
In some instances, one identity may be aware of what has occured while another identity was in control of the body. But in many situations, an identity will have no memory of what happened when a different personality was "in charge."
Treatment
Psychotherapy is usually used to treat this disorder. Together, the patient and therapist will explore past memories to search for the origin of the personality split. Often, DID will develop at an early age to block trauma.
