Instead of one computer, the brain is perhaps more like several computers analyzing different aspects of a problem (in this case, the image) at once, and communicating with one another.

Scientists have built computers that can simulate this type of processing called parallel processing.

Computer programs specifically designed to imitate the way the brain works are called neural nets. (Yount, 1996, p. 49)
