People have been giving and seeking advice regarding memory for centuries.

Ad herennium, published about 80 BC, might be the world's oldest book that instructs its readers on ways to improve their memory. It was written to give advice to scholars on giving speeches from memory. (Yount, p. 76)

In 1491, Peter of Ravenna, from Italy, published The Phoenix, which provided businessmen with memory tips. (Yount,p. 77)

In 1600, Matteo Ricci, an Italian Missionary in China, wrote a book with memory tips to help students prepary for a test to qualify for government jobs. (Yount, p 77)
