The Borley Rectory as it was before the tragic fire that saw it's end
The Borley Rectory is commonly called "the most haunted house in England" for the supposed pressence of many spirits. The site originally hosted a monastery where Benedictine monks lived and preached, despite the fact that the monastery was officially owned by the Waldergrave family who lived there for around about three hundred years.
In the late 1800s, a descendant of the Waldergraves, reverend H.D.E. Bull, built a rectory on the site and it was after the construction of this was complete, that strange happenings began.
One ghost that was seen was that of a nun, who, in the 13th century, fell in love with a monk that lived there. Legend tells that they tried to escape together and were caught in their horse and carriage that would have otherwise been their ticket to freedom and a happy life together. The monk was hung and the nun was walled up alive. Some people have claimed to see the ghost of the horse and carriage as well as that of the nun.
Reverend Harry Bull, who met his fate there also, has been seen, dressed in the grey jacket he supposebly died in.
