Complementary Angles

In the triangle PQR in the diagram, ÐP and ÐR are complementary angles as ÐP + ÐR = 90°

Example

Using the right-angles triangle in the diagram, show that

a) sin (90° - q) = cos q
b) cos (90° - q) = sin q
c) tan (90° - q) =

sin (90° - q) = a/c          cos q = a/c

    cos (90° - q) = b/c          sin q = b/c
    tan (90° - q) = a/b
Thus, sin (90° - q) = cos q
        cos (90° - q) = sin q
         tan (90° - q) =
