Given the graph of y = f(x), the following indicate the need for translation:
                                      g(x) = f(x) + a
                                             g(x) = f(x + a)
 
Graph of y = sin 2x + 0.5
 
          
This graph is obtained by translating the graph of y = sin 2x in the direction of the  positive y-axis by 0.5 units.
 
Graph of y = sin (x + 90o)
 
           
This graph is obtained by translating the graph of y = sin x in the direction of the negative x-axis by 90o. Note that this curve is actually the cosine curve.
