Gradient of a line

The gradient of a line is the degree of steepness of the slope of the line. It is given by the vertical change divided by the horizontal change.

If the angle between the line and x-axis, q, is known, then
                                          m = tan q.

Various types of gradient:

Example: Given the points A (-1, 3) and B (2, 4), find the
       (i)   distance between A and B
       (ii)  midpoint of AB
       (iii) gradient of line segment AB.

Solution:

(i) Distance

(ii) Midpoint

(iii) Gradient
