Algebraic Fractions Sometimes
you are given a rational function that is not in standard form. To integrate,
we have to manipulate the function. Here are two basic types.
Partial
Fractions
If
the function can be simplified into partial fractions, do so and then apply
the integratula for logarithms.
Quadratic
denominator that cannot be factorised
If
the denominator cannot be factorised further, then split the function into two
fractions, one which can be integrated into a logarithmic function, and the
other, inverse tangent. The latter can be done by completing the square in the
denominator.
