Inequalities

What is an inequality?

Let say there are y students at a funfair:

If there are 200 students, we write y=200. This is an equation. It has only one answer, i.e. y has only one value

If there are more than 200 students, we write y>200.

This is an inequality. It has many answers, i.e. y can have any numerical value ranging from 0 to 199.

What are the inequality signs?

There are 4 inequalities sign you need to know. They are ">", "<", "" & "
> means greater than
< means less than
means greater than or equal to
means less than or equal to

Why learn Inequalities?

Inequalities are used in traffic signs all over the world. For example, a sign with the number 90 written on it tells you that your driving speed must be 90km/h. Thus you can see that inequalities are used in daily lives. Inequalities are also used to help solve other types of math problem like equations.
