Equations
What is an Equation? Let say there are y students at a carnival: If there are 200 students, we write y=200. This is an equation. It has only one answer, i.e. y has only one value.
What are the concepts? 1. An equation involving variables is called an algebraic equation. 2. Equations always have a LHS and RHS, else it will only be an expression. 3. In the example x + 3 = 7, x = 4 satisfies the equation, 4 is known as the solution or root of the equation. Why learn Equations? Let say you are given a problem: A boat travels 12 km upstream and back in 1hour 45 minutes. If the speed of the current is 3km/h throughout, how do you find out the speed of your boat in still water? Simple, by forming equations and solving them. Thus you see, equations are very useful, and can help you solve many problems. It is a better method to use than trial and error, as it is more reliable, simpler and faster.
