Formulae

A formula expresses a rule in algebraic form

To evaluate a formula, we use the process of substitution.

Example

If V=1/3 Ah, find V when A = 43 and h = 6.

V = 1/3(43)(6)

   = 86

Formulae can be constructed to solve equations. The following examples show how to construct them.

Formula

(a) The sum S of three numbers, a, b and c S = a + b + c
(b) The product P of two numbers x and y P = xy
(c) The difference D between the ages of  two girls; the older one being a and the younger one, b D = a - b
(d) The average age A of 4 boys whose ages are w, x, y and z A = (w + x + y + z)/ 4
