Make Up Your Own Mind in Explorer

Back Up Next

When you drag a file from one disk drive to another, Windows Explorer automatically copies--rather than moves--the file to the destination drive, the assumption being that you don't want to delete the file from its original drive. If, in fact, you do want to MOVE a file from one disk drive to another:

1. Hold down the Shift key.
2. Drag the file to the other disk drive.

Wait--we're not done. When you drag a file to another folder on the SAME disk drive, Explorer automatically moves--rather than copies--the file, the assumption being that you don't really need two copies of a file on the same disk. If, in fact, you do want to COPY a file to a different folder--or to the same folder--on the same disk:

1. Hold down the Ctrl key.
2. Drag the file to another location on the disk.
