A recent Newsday (July 3) issue addressed the growing problem of obesity in children of America. Currently there are 39 states with a 14% or higher rate of obesity in children- up from 4 in 1990. The tremendous health risks associated with obesity is causing scientists to fear that it will replace smoking as the deadliest problem in America. Not only is obesity a problem but eating disorders also. About 5% of teen girls are battling with an eating disorder, and 10% of eating disorder cases are males. Doctors are finding life- threatening eating disorders in children as young as seven! The cause of these tremendous eating problems in US children. Lack of nutritional knowledge. This vital knowledge is withheld until teenage years- when many eating habits have already been adapted. Not only is more nutritional knowledge needed to fight eating disorders and obesity but also just to make the children and adolescents of America live healthier lives. This website is designed to offer accurate and helpful nutritional information to teens and pre-teens.
