Sprains
An injury to a ligament at, or near a joint.
Causes
A wrenching movement at the joint that tears the
surrounding tissues.
Signs & Symptoms
* Recent, violent blow, or a fall.
* Snapping sound of a torn ligament.
* Sharp pain of a muscle tear.
* Difficulty in moving a limb normally.
* Pain at or near the site of injury, made worse
by movement.
* Distortion, swelling and bruising.
* Signs of shock.
Aims
* To relieve pain & swelling.
* Obtain medical attention if necessary.
Treatment
RICE treatment (Rest, Ice,
Compression, Elevation)
1. Rest, steady & support injured part in most
comfortable position.
2. Apply an ice pack or cold compress to cool
a recent injury to reduce swelling at 2-hour intervals for 24 hours.
3. Wrap the injured limb in a thick layer of padding
and bandage firmly.
4. Raise & support injured limb.
If pain persists, consult a doctor. Do not try
to massage the casualty as it causes more swelling.
