When they disembarked in Brazil, the blacks were taken to the slaves' markets, where they were sold. They arrived mistreated from the trip,and were well fed in the first days, to reach better price. The traffickers of the blacks pass oil in their bodies, so they had better appearance in the market. The buyers examined the " pieces " as if they were examining an animal to buy. They touched the muscles, they verified the teeth, they ordered the blacks to jump and to dance ,to see their health condition. The price was high, but it varied in agreement with the age, the sex, physical appearance and the buyer's needs. In the labor periods , it was paid for an African healthy adult 900 grams , not more than 1 kilo and 800 grams of gold, while an ox costed 300 grams of gold and a coat of good fabric 60 grams of gold. After having been bought, they were marked with iron in ember in the backs, in the arm, in the forehead, or in the chest and later they were taken to the farms where started to inhabit the slave quarters, vast lodgings of collective habitation, later accompanied the owners to the plantation or the mines of gold and silver. |
