Seals live in coastal waters throughout the world, especially in the polar regions, and in some fresh water lakes in Asia. They are mostly found in Arctic and Antarctic waters.
Seals eat fish, krill, squid, octopuses, shellfish, seabirds, penguins, oysters, starfish, and shrimp.
The seal is endangered because poachers want their skins. A long time ago poachers wanted the seals' blubber, hides, and skins. In some areas fisherman still kill them and blame the seal for the loss of large numbers of fish. Also, when the seals are young they have a fluffy white coat, and poachers would kill the baby seals for their nice coat.
You can help a seal fund, or you don't have to hunt these animals down. You can also spread the word about these endangered animals. A fund you can join is at the seal home page link at the bottom of the page.
There are a total of thirty-three species of a seals and twelve of them are endangered. Seals weigh from 198 pounds to 7,900 pounds. They are able to have one pup after a pregnancy of seven to twelve months, depending on the species. The seal's name means "sea dog" or "sea calf".
