Biodiversity. The plant and animals species inventory operations performed under the leadership of ARBDD (the Administration of the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve) have identified 5200 species and this represents an outstanding diversity. Obviously, the total number of the species is grater and further investigations are to specify it the Danube Delta is on the first position both in area and in biodiversity among the 29 damp regions around the Black sea, which regions are subject to the international forum's attention for nature preservation. The existence of such an impressive number of species is due both to the biotope mosaic which displays very different conditions, from purely aquatic ones to paludous ones, saltings, dry sandy dunes, human settlements, and to etc; and to the geographical position at the interference of the Pontic steppes, the central European forests, the Balkan Moesic and Mediterranean regions.
