Welcome!
Romania is fortunate to be one of the few European countries generously blessed by nature. Here the different forms of relief harmonize to perfection, making up a whole of great beauty. The Danube springs in Germany, washes several countries of the old continent and ends its journey on the Romanian territory where, before flowing into the Black Sea, it forms a picturesque delta covering 70 km in surface area.
The Danube Delta is the space between the three river's arms: Chilia, Sulina and Sfantul Gheorghe, together with the Razim-Sinoe lagunar system. It has a 4340 sq. km area and constitutes actually a low terminal plain in full process of alluvial formation.
Common achievement of the Danube and the Black Sea, the Danube Delta is a "raw", still developing landscape, a true "livre natural laboratory" were an exceptional dynamics is taking place at the level of all its natural components. From a morphohydrographic standpoint the Danube Delta is characterized by the bank ridges or dry land which occupy roughly 13-16% of the total area and the zones temporarily or permanently covered by water (including the Danube arms, the rivulets, canals, lakes, swamps) which represent an overwhelming proportion of the total area.
"The country on the other side of the fog", as Mihail Sadoveanu, the famous prose-writer, called it, the Danube Delta displays the most exotic scenery in the Letea wood, formed of oak trees and an intricate jumble of plants and climbers, genuine lianae which confer the aspect of a miniature tropical forest.
"A metropolis of birds", the Danube Delta gathers migratory birds from Egypt as well as those coming from as far as the Caucasus over Crimea or from the Northern and Central Europe. They all make a regular halt in the Delta, which becomes a "birds' paradise".
Unique in Europe, the Danube Delta completes by its natural savagery and exotic features the original spell of the Romanian land. It is an eternal garden, bestowing the most various colors and wonderful surprises. The jump of gamboling fishes, the wing flutter of all kinds of birds, the hardly sensed rustle of reed and buirusch in the breeze, the furtive, timorous but nevertheless agile movement of its living beings are crowning, all of them the splendor of a parcel of paradise - the Danube Delta.
